U.S. TV special. The Beatles historical 1965 NYC performance to over 55,000 fans--the largest concert at that time. Also performing are King Curtis, Brenda Holloway, Sounds Incorporated and the Discotheque Dancers. Murray "The K" and Cousin Brucie are MCs. Great performance and backstage footage. The Beatles discuss touring, the fans, being a "Beatle" and their thoughts on New York City. Songs include "Twist And Shout," "I Feel Fine," "Dizzy Miss Lizzy," "Ticket To Ride," "Act Naturally," "Can't Buy Me Love," "Baby's In Black," "Hard Day's Night," "Help" and "I'm Down."

This is a real treat - one we've been waiting for for a while and, following the sneak peaks from the Scorsese film had high high hopes for. And this excellent package delivers - a treasure of a collectors box - love that flip-book! Apart from the collector's box and the flip-book the real carrot is the 2nd disc for which "D.A. Pennebaker created this new work culled from over 20 hours of never-before-seen rare footage from his personal archive of film negatives. Concert Films
Most shows now are probably being filmed, at least in part, by digicam wielding members of the audience. The films range from shaky, distant, dark, obscured, impossible to watch through to steady, clear, close films with great sound. There's virtually nothing from the 70's or 80's but the 90's and 00's are well covered.
The ratings: * - fairly tough going - hardcore fans only; ** - not bad, watchable for long stretches; *** - Prety good or better throughout;

TV Talkin'

This 'blog' is intended as a resource to support my DVD trading of rare and unreleased film and television recordings of my favourite bands and musicians. At one extreme that's Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen through to the likes of Bjork, Pink Floyd and Hawkwind at the other. If you're interested in a particular artist click on their name on the left menu for relevant posts.

I also maintain a number of web sites which are listed at the top of the panel on the right - there's more information here for the artists covered. These sites will link back to this blog increasingly if the idea works out.

The main blog item is the Trading List which has all the DVDs available. I prefer to trade for other DVDs, but recognising everyone has to start somewhere or may not have the facilities to copy discs, will also trade for other memorabillia, books, official DVDs and even PayPal donations to support the running of the sites and the quest for new material.

Thunder on the Mountain - Dylan's new video

The video for "Thunder on the Mountain," is on-line at the Slate website, It's a whirlwind tour of the many phases, and faces, from fierce '60s folk-rock tyro to white-makeup-caked troubadour to craggy old bard with a gleam in his eye and a Vincent Price mustache. The video draws on several decades of archival footage, some of it previously unseen. It's a panorama of 40-odd years of American musical history. Plus a Dylan video competition!

Bob Dylan - Modern Times DVD

Got a few listens into Modern Times and it's certainly a grower - like it more each time - though for me it isn't in the same league as Desire and some of the other 70's albums. The DVD is a bit disappointing, only containing:
- Blood in my Eyes (Promo);
- Love Sick (Grammies 1998)
- Things Have Changed (Promo)
- Cold Irons Bound (Masked & Anonymous excerpt - full version)

Would have liked to have seen the new Scarlett Johanssen When the Deal Goes Down promo in there - even though Bob himself doesn't appear - guess it wasn't ready in time for the pressing.

Hawkwind - Take Me To Your Future DVD details

Finally received my copy of Take Me To Your Future from Amazon. The DVD tracks are a mixed lot, most interestingly a few are pitched as trailers for forthcoming DVD releases:

1. Images (from the forthcoming DVD release 'Space Bandits' > and is a promo from the old 1992 Promotional Films VHS crelease)
2. Utopia (from the forthcoming DVD release 'Australia 2000' and is from the ABC-TV show)
3. Assassins of Allah (from the forthcoming DVD release, 'Live at the Astoria 2005' - available only to HW passport holders - nice film ('cos I was there! but the usual static full stage camera from the mixing desk - great sound though - this one I want!!)
4. The Golden Void (from the forthcoming DVD release 'Treworgey Three Fayre 1989' - available only to HW passport holders - also an old VHS release)
5. Steppenwolf - a 1996 rehearsal at the band's studio. (This recording is exclusive to this release but contains no band footage, just a dancer rehearsing in Dave Brock's farmyard).
6. Paradox (full studio audio version with an image slideshow taken from the TMTYL launch party).
7. Don't Be Donkish - (An 'exclusive' audio track with images from the first two Hawkfests)

So in fact only the 2005 Astoria clip can be describe as a 'new live film' - but there you go. Just about worth the asking price.

New Bob Dylan DVD just in. The 2nd 1996 Atlanta Olympices gig at the House of Blues.
This is a bit grainy throughout and Bob's on autopilot most of the time, but a watchable film nonetheless.

Pink Floyd DVD

Pink Floyd were absolutely my favourite band from 1973 through to 1980 - only occassionally challenged by Peter Gabriel and Bob Dylan. There'd be a lot more on them on this blog but there are loads of excellent resources already out there and the world doesn't need another Pink Floyd web page. Check out Harvested.org for the last word on Pink Floyd bootlegs - both audio and DVD, including tracklists and covers. My Floyd DVDs are:

New Hawkwind DVD awaited

The new Hawkwind mini-album/DVD is out now according to the Hawkwind website - however I'm yet to see it in the shops and my order at Amazon is showing the shipping date as 5th September.

A track list for the DVD section has appeared, but no indication of when or where the films originate from. Let's wait and see if the packaging gives us any clues:

Scarlett Johansson Stars in 'When The Deal Goes Down' Film Directed By Bennett Miller Set to New Bob Dylan Song

NEW YORK, Aug. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Actress Scarlett Johansson stars in a new short film set to Bob Dylan's new song "When The Deal Goes Down," which premiered on AOL yesterday and will be widely released online and to video channels today. Directed by Academy Award nominee Bennett Miller (Capote), the silent film was shot on 8mm and takes place in the early 1960s. Clues connecting the film's scenes to Bob Dylan's early career are creatively placed throughout the piece.

The film has been released in conjunction with Bob Dylan's new album, Modern Times, which was released Tuesday to massive critical acclaim. Rolling Stone declared it "his third straight masterwork" and awarded the album its highest rating of 5 stars. The Los Angeles Times called Dylan "our living Rosetta Stone, his songs carrying forth the essence of a thousand blues and folk classics, connecting the canonical and the folkloric to the present day."

TV Talkin' DVD Trading Policy

DVD-R
· My DVDs are burnt on quality branded DVD-R discs and are tested before being sent out.
· My source DVDs are Region free - There is a mix of PAL & NTSC formats though this shouldn't be an issue for most modern players.
· Source quality is variable – a lot of my material is old archive material and not necessarily broadcast standard. I try and provide an indication of quality but many discs I haven't been able to watch completely myself yet!
· DVD trades are generally not supplied with artwork.

Trading
· I’m looking for rare, pro-shot film of Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and other artists.
· I’ll also consider trades for audience films for Leonard Cohen and Bjork.
· Please state the quality and format of your material;
· I generally trade 1 for 1 but will go to 2 or 3 for 1 for rare items;
· If your source material is VCD, DVD-/+R or VHS (NTSC or PAL) you can trade for DVD;
· I will digitise VHS video and return tapes and a VCD/DVD in return for keeping a DVD copy myself;
· I will generally send out discs within 48 hours of agreeing a trade;
· Discs go out first-class post with a plastic wallet in a secure padded envelope.

Donations
· As I have most of the mainstream circulating material it is getting harder for collectors to offer material I’m interested in. I don’t want to be unhelpful, but I can’t afford to give this stuff away, nor do I simply want to ‘sell’ it on. The mission of my sites is to celebrate and share the art of the performers, not to make a profit out of it.
· The web sites and the collation of material is an expensive business though, (for me at any rate) so I am prepared to provide VCD/DVDs in return for a donation towards the running costs of the site. All donations go back into funding the domains and web-space and buying material that might otherwise not be available to trade/share.
· I simply do not have the time to provide a B&Ps service – sorry.
· I prefer donations via PayPal but can be flexible.

· Sorry if you think this makes me a bread-head, I’m not (honest!).
